Scientific and Clinical Abstracts

  • Abstracts must be formatted as a Word 97-2003 document and uploaded at the end of the online abstract submission process. See formatting details for abstracts below and click on the link to download a TSANZ Abstract template.
  • Before starting the online submission process, have all the submission information and the abstract Word document ready.
  • Click on the link at the foot of this page to proceed to the submission page. You will be taken, step by step, through the submission process. You will be assigned a login name and password to enable you to submit one or more abstracts, review and edit the information you have entered and replace a previously uploaded abstract until the closing submission date. You may print your completed submission form for your records. An automatic reply email will be forwarded once you have uploaded your abstract to indicate that your submission was successful. Retain this email for your records.
    NOTE: Author, title and institution information will appear in the Program and Abstract Book exactly as entered on the submission form, so please proofread all information carefully.
  • Abstract submission closes November 15, 2019.

Scientific and Clinical Abstract submission should be in the following format:

Abstract Format: Size, Presentation and Content

  • Page setup: A4 page size with top and bottom margins of 2.54cm and left and right margins of 3.17cm (use the TSANZ Abstract template provided)
  • Font: Times New Roman, 10 point, single spacing
  • Title: Include the title on your abstract.
  • Authors: for reviewing purposes, do NOT include authors on your abstract Word document. Author details are only to be entered in the appropriate section of the online submission form.
  • Abstract: the abstract should comprise a SINGLE PARAGRAPH with sectional headings in bold: e.g. Aims, Methods, Results and Conclusions. Symbols whether in the title or text must be in Times New Roman font, not Symbol font. Present sufficient data to support conclusions – it is unsatisfactory to use statements such as “data will be presented” or “results will be discussed”. Standard scientific abbreviations may be used – non standard abbreviations should be included in parentheses after the first use of the full word.
  • Word count: the abstract should not exceed 250 words (excludes title, table, graph or figure). A maximum of one table, graph OR figure can be included per abstract. Abstracts that exceed these limits risk not being considered for award categories or presentation and may be returned for rewriting.
  • Graphs/figures: ensure graphs and figures can be read and understood in black and white. They will not be printed in colour in the abstract book.
  • Spelling and grammar: proofread the abstract. Submitted material will be published in the Program and Abstract Book and in Immunology and Cell Biology (if so indicated), therefore, the abstract should contain no errors.

Online Submission Requirements

  • Complete all the fields in the online submission form.
  • Authors: Enter author names in the appropriate section of the online submission form. The presenting author’s name should be entered first. Follow the style used in the example on the submission form.
  • Institution/Organisation: Choose from the drop-down lists or type your details into the fields provided. Up to 4 institutions/organisations may be entered per author.
  • Abstract title: enter the title in the appropriate section of the submission form using all CAPITAL LETTERS.

Presentation Format
Scientific and Clinical Abstracts of sufficient standard will be selected on merit for either of two types of presentations oral or poster presentations in 2020. 
Please note:
ral presentations will be allocated 10 minutes with discussion time of 2 minutes.  We suggest that presenters bring a print-out of their presentations for informal discussions with colleagues and collaborators during session breaks.
Posters should be A0 size (841mm x 1189mm) in portrait orientation  

Early Career Researcher Awards

To be considered for the Early Career Researcher Awards, the applicant must:

  • be a current financial member of the Society
  • be within 3 (Clinical Researchers) or 5 (Basic Science Researchers) years of conferral of a specialist qualification/postgraduate research degree, or full-time equivalent where a career disruption exists* at the closing date of the awards
  • have an abstract accepted for oral presentation
  • attend and present their abstract
  • apply on the abstract form for an Early Career Researcher Award at the time of abstract submission

The President’s Prizes (Clinical Research and Basic Science)

The two President's Prizes are awarded by TSANZ to the best early career investigators who are current financial members of the Society. The awards will be based on a submitted abstract and invited oral presentation of research performed by the applicant in the President’s Prize Symposium at the Annual Scientific Meeting. The current value of each award is up to the value of $2,500 to attend a scientific meeting. The money is to cover the cost of travel, registration and accommodation and should be used within two years of winning the prize. An additional $500 prize for personal use is provided. Applicants must indicate their intention to be considered for the Presidents Prize on their abstract submission form.

President’s Prize - Clinical Researcher Award: To be eligible for this category the applicant must be a clinician working in their field either full-time or part-time equivalent and be within 3 years (or 3 years full-time equivalent where a career disruption exists*) of completing their highest degree/specialist qualification at the closing date of the awards.

President’s Prize - Basic Science Researcher Award: To be eligible for this category the applicant must be either a full-time or part-time student or researcher within 5 years (or 5 years full-time equivalent where a career disruption exists*) of conferral of a postgraduate research degree at the closing date of the awards

*Career Disruption: Career disruptions will be considered in calculating eligibility for awards. A career disruption involves a prolonged interruption to an applicant’s capacity to work, due to pregnancy; major illness; carer responsibilities including parental leave and care for immediate family (e.g. spouse, children or elderly parent), or work within industry (with no capacity to be involved with medical research). Note that clinical work cannot be taken into consideration for career disruption if applying for the Clinical Researcher Award, and teaching roles (within a University or Clinical environment) cannot be taken into consideration for career disruption for any award. Any relevant career disruptions need to be clearly outlined in a separate word document submitted with your abstract.
